Mykonos is a linear transformer driver (LTD) that delivers MA class current at 80 ns rise-time to a small target chamber in support of pulsed power and HED science. The facility allows for hands-on, pulsed power, experimental training for students and staff along-side senior Sandia scientists in an environment that is more accessible than the Z Facility. In recent years we have supported students and research projects in areas of: Power Flow Studies, Optical diagnostics, x-pinches and more. We have recently established the Mykonos Academic Access Program (MAAP) that will grant outside university access to the facility as part of the ZNetUS network, and we are eager to host your team at our facility.

The Mykonos Facility is located in Tech Area IV at Sandia National Laboratories. The high bay has a square footage of 4054 ft and houses the pulsed power driver and an EMI shielded control room. The Mykonos pulsed power driver consists of 5, three-meter-diameter LTD cavities. Each cavity contains 36 LTD bricks comprised of a 200 kV multi-gap switch and two 40 n capacitors per brick. The five cavities are triggered sequentially and drive a matched impedance load.

Experimental work area

The experimental work area has a rectangular square footage of 12 × 8 ft and is fully enclosed and certified as a laser control area (LCA). The target chamber is mounted to the vacuum insulator at a height of 6 ft (center line), and is surrounded by a 8 × 7 ft optical breadboard along the wall that allows for flexible diagnostics configurations.
